* Some of you will be getting Jimmy Nardello sweet peppers which are long and thin, range in color from green to red, and look like a hot pepper.

** Husk cherries are similar to tomatillos except they are smaller and sweeter. To eat, just take them out of their paper lantern and eat raw. They should be golden in color. If any are green just let them sit like you would a ripening tomato.

*** If you get any tomatoes that aren't quite ripe, just let them sit (not in the fridge) in a bag for a day or two and they will ripen right up.

**** Our melons are ripening very erratically this year, so some of you will be getting melons this week, and the rest of you over the next several. Your cantaloupe may need to sit for a few days to ripen. If it does, you'll be able to tell it's ready when it is fragrant and the end of the melon gives a little when you apply pressure it. If your water melon is not ripe, it will not ripen — let us know and we'll get you a replacement next week.

CUTTING GARDEN: Please visit the cutting garden and take a large bouquet of flowers and several bunches of herbs. There is plenty of basil for pesto — much of the basil has been ravaged by beetles, but it would be perfect for pesto. There is also a new planting of basil which is much fresher looking and ready for harvest.

Half Shares:
1 lb. fingerling potatoes*

bunch chard or collards
1-2 heads of cabbage or radicchio**
pint of cherry tomatoes or 2 slicing tomatoes
assorted hot peppers
cutting garden

* Fingerling potatoes are generally longer and thinner than other potatoes. Some can be quite small. They are of an ideal size for roasting or stewing. The flavor is also special.

** Radicchio looks like a purple and white head of cabbage. It is eaten raw in salads. There are many good recipes for radicchio salads online.

*** Beet greens can be eaten raw or cooked.

GENERAL REMINDER: Wash and inspect your veg before eating! We are entering cabbage-looper season. Cabbage-loopers are green worms that love brassicas (kale, cabbage, broccoli etc). We recommend soaking your broccoli in salted water for ten minutes before washing and eating. The loopers will vacate the florets more quickly in salted water.

CUTTING GARDEN TODAY: The cutting garden has plentiful delights! Please take several bunches of herbs and a large bouquet.

* The squash shaped like flying-saucers are patty-pan summer squash and can be sliced and cooked just like any other summer squash, skin and all.

** Some of the slicing tomatoes are cat-faced, meaning there is some irregular shaping and some rough patches of skin. Cat-facing is generally caused by moisture-stress — in this case it's likely too little water. The tomatoes are still delicious — just cut out any undesired bits.

CUTTING GARDEN:
There are lots of herbs and flowers! If you are not visiting the cutting garden, you are missing out! This week, feel free to take several bunches of herbs, including enough basil to make a small batch of pesto. Please also take a larger bouquet — be aggressive!
